CALL FOR JSAH ASSOCIATE EDITOR, 2026-27

Mar 14, 2025 by SAH News
The Society of Architectural Historians invites nominations and self-nominations for the position of Associate Editor of JSAH to serve a two-year term: January 1, 2026–December 31, 2027. Following this appointment, the Associate Editor will serve as JSAH Editor for a two-year term beginning on January 1, 2028, until December 31, 2029.

Candidates for the JSAH Associate Editor should be scholars of the history of the built environment with stature in the field and experience in editing book and/or exhibition reviews; institutional affiliation is not required. Candidates should be published authors of at least one peer-reviewed book.

The JSAH Editor and JSAH Associate Editor work closely as a team and together are responsible for the content and focus of the journal, which is published simultaneously in print and electronic formats (JSAH Online). The JSAH Associate Editor will assist the Editor in the following:

  • soliciting content
  • reviewing submitted manuscripts
  • securing and coordinating blind peer reviews of submitted manuscripts
  • communicating decisions to authors
  • preparing material for four issues per year
  • supervising the JSAH Book, Exhibition, and Multimedia Review Editors, the JSAH Managing Editor, Copy Editor, and Editorial Assistant
  • working with SAH staff and with the production, marketing, and technical staff at University of California Press, to ensure timely quarterly publication and to promote the journal
The JSAH Editor and JSAH Associate Editor will submit semi-annual written updates and attend SAH Executive Committee and Board meetings (April, summer, and November). Periodic meetings with the JSAH Editorial Advisory Committee, whose members advise and assist the Editor and Associate Editor and act as ambassadors for JSAH, will take place by conference call and at the Society’s Annual International Conference in April.

Candidates must be current SAH members and should not be serving as editor of, or on the editorial board of, a similar, scholarly journal that focuses on the built environment.

SAH seeks to create a culture where candidates from all backgrounds and identities feel welcome and can thrive. We encourage candidates from underrepresented and marginalized groups to apply and self-identify in their application materials. SAH seeks applications from colleagues who will contribute to the diversity of perspectives and to conversations about the discipline’s engagements with differences of culture, religion, nationality, race, gender, sexuality, and access.

Required Application Materials:

With each nomination, please send a 500-word statement describing qualifications for appointment, a CV, and the name and full contact information of at least one reference. Nominators should ascertain their nominee’s willingness to serve before submitting a name; self-nominations are also welcome.

For full consideration, please send nominations by May 31, 2025.

Nominations will be reviewed by an ad hoc committee, consisting of two members of the Editorial Advisory Committee and two members of the Executive Committee. Their appointment recommendation will be brought before the full SAH Board for approval. Candidates may expect to hear about their status after the summer Board meeting.
