Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada
50th Annual Conference

Carleton University & Library and Archives Canada
Ottawa, Ontario
May 27–30, 2025

For its 50th Annual Conference, the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada will return to the place it began in 1974: Ottawa. The conference will be held from May 27 to 30, 2025, hosted by Carleton University and Library and Archives Canada. The SSAC is now accepting proposals for sessions covering all aspects of the built environment in Canada. Scholars, practitioners, and professionals from any discipline whose work relates to the built environment in Canada are welcome to submit. Sessions may relate to history, theory, design, pedagogy or any issue connected to the creation, experience, impact, and understanding of Canada’s built environment.

Those interested in chairing a session are invited to email proposals to ssac.2025.seac@gmail.com by end of day Monday, November 11, 2024 (extended deadline).

Please include, in a single PDF file:

  • Name and one-page CV of proposed session chair(s)
  • Title and abstract of the session (maximum 250 words)
  • Format of session: paper session, panel, discussion, debate, etc.
  • Names of possible or invited presenters (if known)
  • Any special physical or technical requirements for the session

The national capital is particularly well suited to celebrating this milestone in the Society’s history. Sitting on traditional, unceded Anishinabe Algonquin territory, it straddles the border between the two original colonies comprising the United Province of Canada (established 1841), and was named capital in 1857. Ottawa, the Outaouais and the surrounding region remain a vibrant, diverse and dynamic blend of peoples and places.

The SSAC supports inclusive dialogue and encourages perspectives illuminating the influence and experience of gendered and sexually diverse, BIPOC, and disabled communities. We welcome and encourage co-submissions by established and emerging scholars.

Authors of accepted proposals may be asked to provide a more concise session description for the Call for Papers, to be circulated in late November 2024. Session chairs and presenters must be members of the SSAC at the time of the conference and must fund their own travel and attendance. Limited travel funding is available for student session chairs and presenters through the Geoffrey and Joan Simmins Fund.

Session chairs will hear back from the committee by Monday, November 18, 2025.
