Travel Fund for Graduate- and Undergraduate-level Art History Classes

The CAA's Art History Travel Fund, established to provide students with opportunities to gain first-hand knowledge of original works of art, grants instructors of qualifying undergraduate and graduate art history classes up to $10,000 to cover student and instructor travel, accommodations, and admission fees to special exhibitions in the US and around the world.

Eligibility

  • Instructors of graduate- and undergraduate-level art history classes  
  • Exhibitions on any artist, period, or area of art history  
  • Class can be no larger than fifteen students 
  • Awards can be made only to institutions which have a current CAA institutional membership in good standing 
  • Applicants must have a current CAA individual membership in good standing 
Awards may only be used for admission fees, travel, and lodging expenses for the instructor and students. Every attempt to attain group rates must be made. Meals and other incidental costs cannot be covered by grant funds.

Funds may only be used to travel to exhibitions that correspond directly to the content of the class.

Travel to permanent collections, performances, temporary installations, or related ephemeral events are not eligible.

Application Requirements

  • Instructor CV   
  • Course description and syllabus detailing the exhibition as part of the pedagogical aim of the course/how travel to the exhibition will be integrated into the course (500 word maximum)  
  • Explanation of instructor’s expertise in exhibition subject matter (250 word maximum) 
  • Tentative itinerary of travel and lodging (250 word maximum) 
  • Budget detailing lodging expenses and local travel expenses associated with traveling to and from the exhibition, and admission costs, including an explanation of how any travel and accommodation funds in excess of the award will be raised 
  • Letter of support from the instructor’s department chair or dean  

 

Awardee Reporting Requirements

Awardees must submit a report explaining in detail the benefits received and problems encountered during travel to the exhibition for which support was received. Reports should be 1000 words maximum and must be submitted to CAA no later than two months after the completion of travel.

Recipients of the award will be offered the chance to share their experience at the Annual Conference. CAA will make the session available, but costs associated with attending the conference, including registration, membership, travel, and accommodation will be the participants' responsibility.

 

Deadlines

  • October 15 for Spring 2025 exhibitions
  • April 15 for Fall 2025 exhibitions
