It seems an appropriate time to revisit Contextualism and Collage City within the framework of the Genealogy of Urban Design network using the new tools of representation available. The initial Contextualism, Collage City and Beyond seminar investigated Colin Rowes mid-twentieth century role in appropriating 1890s reaction to Von Forsters 1860 imperial design for the Vienna Ringstrasse. Rowes critical appropriation paved the way for many later iterations. Almost all the speakers in the first seminar were students of Rowe studio.
The second seminar investigated the diffusion of Rowe’s pedagogy into a wider network, with younger speakers from Asia and Latin America. Codes shifted to create a greatly more fragmented and flexible Collage City inclusive of self-built, informal urbanism.
The third seminar returns to Sitte’s community arguments to study contextualism and collage at the Micro-Urban level in Asia. The seminar will begin at at 14.00 hr CET, NY 8am., 21.00 China
