Invitation for Nominations for the SAH Historic Interiors Article Award

Nov 13, 2024 by SAH News
Presented by the Society of Architectural Historians for a written work that contributes significantly to our understanding of interiors history.

Purpose

This award was conceived by the Historic Interiors Affiliate Group of SAH (HIG) in 2022. HIG is a Board-approved SAH affiliate group that is focused on fostering new approaches to the history of interiors as both an independent line of scholarly inquiry and as an important aspect of the expanded study of the built environment. Although historic interiors are an essential component of the history of architecture, research related to interior spaces including their design, uses, circulation, and meanings have not received as much attention or focus within architectural history. This award will recognize excellence in research of a scholarly article from an English-Language publication that has made a significant contribution to the study of historic interiors.

Criteria for Submission

  • Articles nominated for consideration must have been peer-reviewed and published in print or digital format.
  • Peer-reviewed articles nominated for this award must have been published (copyright date) within the two years prior to submission for consideration.
  • Essays from peer-reviewed books are eligible if the article is new and not a reprint of older scholarship.
  • Articles must be published in English.
  • Subject matter may include a variety of work related to the history of interiors from any period of history and any part of the world. This expansive scholarship can include articles that consider experiential, phenomenological, and theoretical as well as visual explorations of interior architecture and interior design.
  • Articles may address historic interiors from an interdisciplinary point of view, creating a multi-dimensional understanding for the production and experience of space through a diverse and inclusive perspective in global history.
  • Nominated articles may be submitted by authors, publication representatives, or peers.
  • Committee members cannot submit articles that they have authored during their term of service as jurors.

Evaluation of Submissions

In evaluating the submissions, the award committee will focus primarily on the significance of the contribution in terms of its subject matter, well-defined research problem, methodology, materials, theoretical framework, original findings, clarity of its discussion, and ability to place its findings in the field.

The Committee

The three-member award committee is appointed by the President of SAH and will include at least one HIG member who also serves on the HIG Research Committee as well as, whenever possible, SAH members who are also members of HIG Advisory Board or Working Committees.
