SAH Board meets in Albuquerque.

The SAH’s Board of Directors met on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, in a hybrid meeting. The in-person component of the meeting was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in conjunction with the organization’s Annual International Conference. You can find a summary of the board meeting here.

Reports: Board members received, reviewed, and discussed reports from the officers, SAH publications’ editors, committees, affiliate groups, and chapter liaison. Financial discussions included reports from the Treasurer and the Development Committee. Board members also received the preliminary budget for the upcoming fiscal year (FY25). The budget will be ready for a vote of approval at the fall board meeting.

Transitions: Seven members including two officers rotated off the board. Outgoing members were Patricia Morton (President), Lynne Horiuchi (Secretary), Eliana Abu-Hamdi Murchie, Ana María León, Vimalin Rujivacharakul, Anooradha Iyer Siddiqi, and Ipek Türeli. Mohammad Gharipour assumed the role of SAH President. Swati Chattopadhyay was elected as Vice President. Gail Dubrow was re-elected as Treasurer. Bryan Clark Green was elected as Secretary. We welcomed five new members--Alex Bremner, University of Edinburgh, Suha Hasan, architect and founder of ASH, Stockholm, Sweden, Ann Huppert, University of Washington, Jacquelyn Sawyer, National Building Museum, and Mantha Zarmakoupi, University of Pennsylvania.

Conferences: SAH will host a virtual conference in September 19-21, 2024. The SAH’s in-person 78th Annual International Conference will be held in Atlanta, April 30-May 4, 2025. The board approved Mexico City as the location for the 2026 conference.

Membership: The board approved the creation of new upper-level membership categories that will encourage members to become donors by adding donation amounts to their regular membership dues. The plan is to introduce these categories in the fall at the start of the next fiscal year.

Affiliate Groups: 1. The board rejected a proposal that would have introduced dues for membership in SAH’s affiliate groups. 2. In response to a recommendation from the Minority Scholars Affiliate Group, a majority of board members voted to support a statement released by the Middle East Scholars Association (MESA) regarding the ongoing violence in Gaza.

Charnley Persky House: The board approved proposed changes to the Charnley Persky House’s governance structure that will allow for the creation of a museum-focused governing board that would be responsible for the use and maintenance of the house.
