The Society of Architectural Historians will hold its 2016 Annual International Conference from Wednesday, April 6, through Sunday, April 10, at the Pasadena Convention Center, 300 E Green Street in Pasadena, Calif. Over 700 people from around the world will convene to share new research on the history of the built environment from antiquity to the critical present. “New Local/Global Infrastructures” is the theme of the 2016 Pasadena/Los Angeles conference which includes 42 paper sessions as well as roundtables, exhibits, talks and public architecture tours. Regional sessions include “Los Angeles Infrastructure: Design, Aesthetics, Publics,” “Styles, Revival Styles, California Styles,” and “Reappraising California Counterculture.”
Speakers include
Eric Avila, professor of urban cultural history at UCLA, and
Dana Cuff, UCLA architecture professor and director of the cityLAB research center. Avila will give the introductory address “Learning from Los Angeles: Identity, Mobility, Climate and Design,” and Cuff will present the plenary talk “Potentials of the Profession” following the SAH Awards Ceremony.
Public tours led by historians, architects and other local experts will cover the architecture of Pasadena, Irvine, and Claremont as well as the L.A. neighborhoods of Silver Lake, Frogtown and Boyle Heights. Other tours will explore the works of architects such as Richard Neutra, Frank Lloyd Wright, John Lautner, Myron Hunt, and Rudolph Schindler, among others. Tours-only registration opens to the public on February 4, 2016.
In addition, SAH will present “Surveying L.A.: Past, Present, Future,” a public seminar that will take an in-depth look at
SurveyLA, the city’s comprehensive study of historic resources funded by the J. Paul Getty Trust and the City of Los Angeles. Panelists representing the City of Los Angeles, Getty Conservation Institute, Getty Research Institute, and others will discuss the local and global implications and applications of SurveyLA and its website,
HistoricPlacesLA.
