  Louis Kahn's African-American Vernacular
SAH Blog post by Kostis Kourelis
When the telephone rang in my office at Franklin & Marshall College, I was surprised to learn that the caller on the other line was a resident of a Louis Kahn house and, most strikingly, a Louis Kahn house that has been largely forgotten. In 1942, Kahn, Oscar Storonov, and George Howe reconfigured the traditional row house to serve a community of African-American steel workers returning from World War II. Known to just a handful of architectural historians, Carver Court in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, had receded from public attention. Read More.

One-to-One SAH Membership Campaign
SAH President Abby Van Slyck introduced a new membership initiative, the One-to-One Campaign, on Wednesday, April 9th, at the SAH Annual Conference in Austin. The campaign, developed by the Membership and Diversity Committee, aims for each member of SAH to recruit one new member by the end of the calendar year. With your help, we can double our membership numbers and reach our goal of 5,000 members. This would not only allow the Society to have a bigger impact on current discussions about the built environment, it would also help reduce the costs of many SAH activities for each individual member. The SAH website offers some thoughts to consider and helpful tips to use when reaching out to potential members. If you have questions or would like to request a membership kit, please contact SAH Membership Director Anne Bird at membership@sah.org.

The theme of the meeting, "Museums: Building Collections, Building Community," reflects a surge in repurposing buildings into showcases for history, arts, and culture, as exemplified by Seattle's Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI), located in the former Naval Reserve Armory.
