Dear SAH Members,

I hope this message finds you and your loved ones safe and well.

Over the past few months, the challenges impacting the world have created uncertainty and disruption for many of us, and in various ways. The livelihoods and professional careers of some members have been put at risk, and there are significant apprehensions surrounding academic freedom within our educational institutions.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to those of you who may be facing hardships during this period. Whether it is professional challenges, personal struggles, or simply the weight of the current global situation, please know that you are not alone. Our Society of Architectural Historians is a community of scholars and teachers who share commitments to the understanding and telling of diverse histories of built environments. This is not easy work and it is in such times that our solidarity and support for one another are most crucial.

Despite these obstacles, I am optimistic as we move forward together. Now more than ever, our mission to promote the study and teaching of architectural history takes on renewed significance. We have an opportunity to leverage our collective expertise and knowledge to pursue a positive impact on the world around us. In the face of adversity, let us stand even more firmly against discrimination and inequality in any form and work tirelessly to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for all through our scholarship and practices. 

While our organization primarily focuses on the built environment, we recognize that we cannot ignore the actions of individuals, groups, and nations. Throughout our history, SAH leadership has endeavored to strike a delicate balance on a myriad of issues, from local concerns to international affairs. Amidst the current challenges we face, inclusivity, diversity, and our profound appreciation for architecture and landscape remain at the heart of our work. These core values are the pillars that unite us, even amidst pressures that may threaten to divide institutions like ours. It is our shared passion and dedication that continue to bind us together.  

I am eager and honored to work with each and every one of you as we strive to fulfill our values as a learned society. Your dedication and contributions are invaluable, and I have full confidence in our ability to overcome challenges and emerge stronger together.
