The third edition of the Interior Ecologies conference, to be held December 18-19, 2024, will address porosity and interiority as frameworks for contemporary architectural thinking. By questioning “what is interior” and “where is interior,” the symposium will enact a discursive virtual space to explore the possibilities of interior architecture as an interface. By approaching indoor space as procured through the intermingling, interacting, and exchange of diverse elements – we will consider the role of media, technology, and expanded ecologies in rendering “interior” as a relative projection.

We invite submissions that propose theoretical framings, new vocabularies, research methodologies, and visualization/design tools for conceptually and materially dissolving the walls of interior architecture. Such framings may include the interior as an inter-species network, computational geography, or gender-based technology.
We especially encourage proposals from practitioners working across and between disciplines, experimenting with innovative forms of visual and analytical media. Addressed topics will include the impact of digital platforms on space, globalized commodity circulation, image economies, acoustic ecologies, postnatural territories, machine learning technologies, computational software, gamified landscapes, feminist spatialities and psychic materialities.

The conference will be fully online, with free registration and open access. It will integrate innovative broadcast formats, fostering interaction between speakers, audience, and digitally rendered environments. The event will feature a series of lectures, round tables, and experimental workshops showcasing contemporary research and design approaches in interior architecture.

Please submit an abstract (250 words/examples of other material) of your potential contribution by 28th September 2024. We will notify the participants by mid-October 2024. and publish the program soon thereafter. Submissions can be sent directly to roberto.zancan@hesge.ch
