Society of Architectural Historians Announces 2017 Award Winners

The Society of Architectural Historians has announced the 2017 recipients of the SAH Publication Awards and SAH Award for Film and Video. SAH presented the awards at its 70th Annual International Conference Awards Ceremony on June 8, at the University of Strathclyde's Barony Hall in Glasgow, Scotland.

2017 PUBLICATION AWARDS

Each year, SAH presents publication awards honoring excellence in architectural history, urban history, landscape history and historic preservation scholarship as well as architectural exhibition catalogues. Alice Davis Hitchcock Book Award
Honoring the most distinguished work of scholarship in the history of architecture published by a North American scholar

Meredith Cohen, The Sainte-Chapelle and the Construction of Sacral Monarchy: Royal Architecture in Thirteenth-Century Paris (Cambridge University Press, 2015)

Meredith Cohen is associate professor of medieval art and architecture at University of California, Los Angeles.

Antoinette Forrester Downing Book Award
Honoring excellence in a published work devoted to historical topics in preservation

Richard Longstreth, Looking beyond the Icons: Midcentury Architecture, Landscape, and Urbanism (University of Virginia Press, 2015)

Richard Longstreth is professor of American studies and director of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation at George Washington University

Philip Johnson Exhibition Catalogue Awards
Recognizing excellence of architectural history scholarship in exhibition catalogues

Benjamín Ibarra Sevilla, El Arte de la Cantería Mixteca (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, 2014)

Benjamín Ibarra Sevilla is assistant professor of architecture at the University of Texas at Austin.

Barry Bergdoll, Carlos Eduardo Comas, Jorge Francisco Liernur, and Patricio del Real, eds., Latin America in Construction: Architecture 1955–1980 (The Museum of Modern Art, 2015)

Barry Bergdoll is the Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History at Columbia University and a curator in the Department of Architecture & Design at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Carlos Eduardo Comas is professor of architecture at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande, Porto Alegre, Brazil. Jorge Francisco Liernur is emeritus professor of architecture at the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, Buenos Aires, and a researcher at Argentina’s Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Téchnicas. Patricio del Real is a curatorial assistant in the Department of Architecture & Design at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Elisabeth Blair MacDougall Book Award
Recognizing the most distinguished work of scholarship in the history of landscape architecture or garden design

Elizabeth McKellar, Landscapes of London: The City, the Country, and the Suburbs, 1660–1840 (Yale University Press, 2013)

Elizabeth McKellar is Chair in Architectural and Design History in the History of Art Department at Open University.

Spiro Kostof Book Awards
Recognizing a work in a discipline related to urban history that has made the greatest contribution to our understanding of historical development and change

Marta Gutman, A City for Children: Women, Architecture, and the Charitable Landscapes of Oakland, 1850–1950 (The University of Chicago Press, 2014)

Marta Gutman is associate professor of architectural and urban history at the Spitzer School of Architecture, the City College of New York, and visiting professor of art history at the Graduate Center/CUNY. She is a licensed architect.
