Welcome!

Historians, Educators, Architects, Curators, Preservationists, Enthusiasts:
SAH invites you to participate!

The Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) was founded in 1940 to provide an international forum for those who are interested in architecture and its preservation. SAH promotes the study and preservation of the built environment and actively encourages scholarly research on architectural interests of the past, present, and future.

Membership in the SAH is open to those who, regardless of profession or expertise, are interested in architecture and the protection of buildings of historic and aesthetic importance. The Society's diverse member base represents a cross-section of occupations and experience. From architects and urban planners to scholars, teachers, and students, from libraries and historical societies to museums, all SAH members are connected by a common interest in and enthusiasm for architectural history and preservation.

Becoming a member of the SAH means receiving direct access to some of the most respected, credible, and extensive information resources on architectural topics anywhere in the world.

As a member of SAH you will receive:

  • Subscription to the quarterly Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians (JSAH) and JSAH Onlinethe preeminent English language publication devoted to architectural history and its related arts. Every issue of JSAH and JSAH Online includes articles on current scholarly research, as well as exhibition reviews and reviews of recently published books on architecture and related subjects. Beginning in March 2010, individual members also will be able to access, at no additional cost, the entire library of back issues of JSAH (1941-2009) through JSTOR, the electronic journal storage service. Institutional members are able to subscribe to back issues of JSAH online through JSTOR's Arts and Sciences III Collection.
  • Access to SAHARA (SAH Architecture Resources Archive), the member-contributed online archive of architecture, landscape and urban photographs for teaching and research.  Upload and share your images with your colleagues and download the images contributed by others for your own lectures and research.   Your own images will always be accessible to you, no matter where you are working, and they will be permanently archived.

Subscription to the SAH's quarterly Newsletter, which includes information on upcoming events, tours, awards, and regional SAH chapters.  The Newsletter is now available in both print and electronic formats.
  • Discounted registration at the Society's Annual Meeting, a unique and informative gathering for the presentation of the most recent research in the field, and an opportunity to explore the cultural resources and architectural points of interest in various cities throughout the United States and Canada.  Architects may earn AIA/CES credits for attending lectures and tours.
  • Opportunities to participate in an outstanding series of annual International and Domestic Study Tours led by prominent architects and scholars in the field.  Architects may earn AIA/CES credits for participating.
  • Access to other members through the SAH Listserv, an electronic bulletin board that enables SAH members to contact other scholars easily about particular research interests and challenges.
  • Access to the Charnley-Persky House, the SAH's national headquarters, designed by Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. Every member receives a complimentary tour of the historic site as well as exclusive bookshop discounts when visiting the SAH. Members who are teachers are particularly encouraged to schedule tours for their classes.
  • Opportunities to participate in scholarly programs and professional development through local and regional chapters organized throughout the United States.
  • Architects earn credit through the AIA/CES program for participation in the SAH Annual Meeting and Study Tours. SAH is an accredited service provider.
