We are pleased to announce that 366 new photographs of Hawaiian buildings have been added to SAH Archipedia. Now, 311 of 477 building entries covering the state of Hawaii are fully illustrated, including 92 of the 100 entries accessible via SAH Archipedia Classic Buildings. Kaoru Lovett, a twenty-two year old photographer, cinematographer, artist, and architect, was commissioned to complete the project. This photography project, and other work to convert the Hawaii material from a print to an online publication, was generously funded by a grant from the Atherton Family Foundation, one of the largest endowed grantmaking private resources in the state of Hawaii devoted exclusively to the support of charitable activities. The foundation perpetuates the philanthropic commitment expressed during the lifetimes of Juliette M. Atherton and Frank C. Atherton, and of the family who followed them.
Buildings of Hawaii by Don J. Hibbard, published in 2011 by the University of Virginia Press as part of the award-winning Buildings of the United States series, is the first authoritative, peer-reviewed book to examine and document the entirety of Hawaii’s most significant buildings and landscapes for a general reader. The full text of the book, together with 426 color photos by Augie Salbosa and 20 black and white photos from HABS/HAER, was published online in SAH Archipedia in January 2014.
